How Wisdom Natural Medicine Was Created

If you ever find yourself wondering how Wisdom Natural Medicine was created, this one's for you!

Happy Birthday Wisdom Natural Medicine!

On this day one year ago, I was sitting at my computer in a coffee shop (which I am currently doing) laying the groundwork for Wisdom Natural Medicine. I was waiting for my medical license to arrive and had lots of extra free time so I decided to start creating. When I was in school for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I didn't know exactly how I wanted to practice, I didn't know if I would work independently or get a job. Although I wasn't 100% certain, there was something about this process that felt right and flowed with ease. The name easily came to me and made so much sense; my name (Sophia) means wisdom and to me-TCM is very much a "natural medicine." TCM is based on observing and working with the body, the herbal medicine is all things found in nature that have not been overly broken down or processed. The logo, the theme, the colors, the art-it all just came together. When I considered getting a job and sat down to polish up my resume I hit a block. The jobs out there didn't feel right. They always had an element that felt off, there was something about every job posting that turned me off.

One of my closest friends, Sam, had been running his own massage business for two years and had been renting a treatment room. He told me there were open spaces in his suite and I should check them out. The location was ideal and the price was right, all I had to do was bug the lease holder a little bit and I was in!  I only looked at two other rooms in the Twin Cities but I knew this one was the right fit. Sam was both encouraging and empowering. He set an example for me to see a busy thriving practice. I was able to see how much he put into it and how smoothly it could run. He helped me get set up and gave me a ton of guidance. I know that it would have been a lot more stressful and isolating without Sam.

A supervisor at the school once gave me some great advice, she said to seek out other business owners and ask how they do things, so I did. I thought about the women who I wanted to be like the most. Over the course of the next few months, I met with nearly a dozen women who run their own businesses. I was met with encouragement, advice, direction and positivity. I didn't limit myself to acupuncturists either, my Instagram lesson was from a brow artist. I will always remember and appreciate the generosity of these woman and I pay it forward at every opportunity I can.
